Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 14, 2026

The short version: ScoutSash works without an account. Your reading progress and notes live on your device and sync only through your own private iCloud. We don't show ads, we don't sell your data, and we don't use third-party trackers. The app is intended to be safe for younger Scouts.

1. Who we are

ScoutSash ("we," "us," or "the app") is an independent, unofficial study tool for Scouts working on merit badges. ScoutSash is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Scouting America (formerly the Boy Scouts of America). This policy explains what information the app does and does not handle.

2. Information we do not collect

3. Information stored on your device

The following is created and stored locally on your iPhone or iPad so the app can work:

4. iCloud sync (optional)

If you keep iCloud sync enabled, your progress, notes, and reading positions are synchronized across your own Apple devices using Apple's CloudKit private database. This data is associated with your Apple ID and is handled by Apple under Apple's Privacy Policy. We do not have access to your Apple ID, and we do not operate a server that stores your notes or progress. You can turn sync off at any time in the app's settings. Pamphlet files themselves are not synced; each device downloads them from the official source as needed.

5. Pamphlet downloads

When you download a pamphlet, the app retrieves the PDF directly from Scouting America's official file source to your device. These requests go to Scouting America's servers and are subject to their practices. We do not host copies of pamphlets on our own servers, and we do not attach your identity to these downloads.

6. Content updates

The app periodically fetches an updated list of badges, requirements, and pamphlet links from our content service so the information stays current. These requests deliver content to you and are not used to identify you. Standard, non-identifying technical information (such as an IP address) may appear in routine server logs, as is typical of any internet request; we do not use it to build a profile of you.

7. Diagnostics (if enabled)

If we include crash or performance diagnostics, they are limited to aggregate, non-identifying technical data used only to fix bugs and improve stability. We do not include the content of your notes. Where iOS asks your permission to share diagnostics, you remain in control of that choice.

8. Children's privacy

ScoutSash is designed to be appropriate for Scouts, including children under 13. Consistent with the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and similar laws, we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The app does not require personal information to function, contains no behavioral advertising, and does not include social features that share a child's information publicly. If you believe a child has provided us personal information and you would like it addressed, contact us at the email below.

9. Your choices and control

10. Data security

Data stored on your device is protected by your device's security (passcode, Face ID/Touch ID, and iOS data protection). Synced data is protected by Apple's iCloud security. No method of storage or transmission is 100% secure, but we keep the data we handle to a minimum to reduce risk.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We'll revise the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, provide notice in the app or on this site.
